Project overview

Oakland Recycles is a collaboration of the City of Oakland (City), California Waste Solutions, and Waste Management of Alameda County that offers information and services to help Oakland residents and businesses recycle right.

Approach and Impact

Cascadia provides technical assistance and communications support across Alameda County in support of programs like Oakland Recycles. In 2023, Cascadia was engaged by the City to develop the “Contamination Critters” video series as a creative and engaging way to reach community members and provide information around the proper disposal of common recycling contaminants such as plastic bags, coffee cups, and batteries.

Cascadia worked with City staff to carefully considered messaging, graphics, and language access needs to ensure the videos resonated with community members in the city of Oakland and translated each video into Spanish and Chinese.

Effective messaging is key to long-term behavior change, and we’re excited to have the opportunity to support the City of Oakland and their community to recycle right and improve waste management outcomes.
